Printed organic cotton bags

We print seven organic cotton bags, from a light 150gsm everyday tote to 407gsm canvas, and every one is GOTS certified organic cotton. Between them they cover flat totes, gusseted totes, a zip tote and a drawstring bag. Four are made by Westford Mill and three by Nutshell.

The Premium Organic Cotton Tote Bag and Drawstring Bag share eight colours: Natural, White, Black, Light Grey, Graphite Grey, French Navy, Bright Royal and Classic Red. The three Nutshell bags come in Black or Natural, the wave tote in five wave colours on natural, and the contrast panel tote in six colours over natural.

What makes a bag organic

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, from seed that hasn't been genetically modified. The difference is in the growing. The finished fabric looks and feels like any good cotton, and we screen print it in exactly the same way, in 1 to 4 spot colours.

GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, covers more than the fibre. It checks the organic content and sets environmental and social rules for how the fabric is processed and made up. Westford Mill and Nutshell list all seven of these bags as GOTS certified organic cotton.

That certification belongs to the blank bag as its maker makes it. If you want to put the GOTS name or logo on your printed bags, or on your packaging, talk to us before you order, because using the label has rules of its own.

Is organic right for your order?

Organic cotton costs more than standard cotton, so it's worth being clear about why you want it.

  • You sell the bags, or hand them to customers who read labels. Organic cotton is a claim they can check.
  • Your brand makes environmental promises, and a standard promotional bag would sit awkwardly beside them.
  • You want a sturdier bag anyway. The organic cotton totes are 200gsm and the organic canvas totes 340gsm to 407gsm, all heavier than a standard 140gsm cotton tote. What gsm means
  • You're giving away thousands at an event and price matters most. A recycled bag or a standard cotton tote may suit the job better. If it must be organic, the 150gsm Organic Cotton Tote Bag is the lightest.
  • Whatever the fabric, the greenest bag is the one that gets used. The Environment Agency (2011) found a cotton bag needs 131 uses to match the climate impact of a single-use plastic carrier used once. Are tote bags sustainable?

Questions people ask

Are your organic cotton bags GOTS certified?

Yes. Westford Mill and Nutshell list all seven bags on this page as GOTS certified organic cotton. The certification covers the blank bag. If you plan to use the GOTS name or logo in your own marketing, ask us first.

Does organic cotton print differently?

No. It's the same fibre, grown a different way, so we screen print it just like any cotton bag. On the heavier bags the weave is dense and smooth, which suits fine lines and solid areas of colour.

Can you print white on a black organic bag?

Yes. Light inks on dark bags work well with screen printing. Our guide to printing on dark bags explains how ink colours change on dark fabric.

How do I wash an organic cotton bag?

Westford Mill advises sponge cleaning for its organic bags, and Nutshell advises hand washing for its organic totes. Treat them gently and the print will last as long as the bag.

What is the minimum order?

There's no fixed minimum. Prices on each bag's page start from 25, and you can type in any quantity. If you want to feel the fabric first, order an unprinted sample from the bag's page.

How long does printing take?

Our standard turnaround is 7 to 10 working days from when you approve your proof. Organic bags are ordered in for each job, so they aren't on our express range.
